Al Shabaab returnees claim they were fed up in Somalia

One of the returnees, Omar Said Omar, from Lamu told security agents that poor living conditions, mistreatment by indigenous Somalis within Al Shabaab ranks and lack of salaries had forced most foreign fighters to flee. “The miserable conditions we have been living in are the same that made me leave my home. They are the same conditions I have to live through every day,” Omar said. He told security agents that he was recruited into Al Shabaab by his uncle, a madrassa teacher in Hindi after their father disappeared from home.
