Spectre and Meltdown: What do You Need to Know?

Meltdown and Spectre are the two security flaws that have been identified within the computer processors. Because of these security flaws, the hackers will be able to steal the important data without the knowledge of the users. The chips which have been made long ago will also be affected because of this security glitch.

What are Spectre and Meltdown?

Meltdown is the name of a security flaw which allows the hackers to leap the hardware barrier. There exists an impenetrable barrier between the applications used by the users and the core memory of the computer. This flaw allows the hackers to surpass the hardware protection easily. Spectre allows the hackers to trick the error-free applications and obtains the secret information.

How Serious Is It?

Meltdown is considered to be one of the worst CPU bugs that ever existed. It is extremely serious and it required quick attention. Because of Meltdown, anything that exists in theory can be stolen.  Spectre is harder for the hackers to access and it is more difficult to find a solution. Spectre will pose a bigger problem in the future if left unchecked.

Which Devices Can Be Affected?

All computing devices have the risks of being affected by Spectre. The list includes laptops, desktops, tablets and smart phones. The cloud computing system will not be free from the risk of being affected by Spectre.

What is a Processor?

The CPU is the primary chip in a computer and it is responsible for carrying out all the instructions in a computer program. The CPU is considered to be the brain of the computer and it carries out the commands and co-operates with the rest of the system. The other types of processors are the graphic processing units and the co-processors which help in detecting motion.

Does it affect only Intel Processors?

Spectre affects all the modern processors. The ones which have been designed by Intel, AMD and ARM but Meltdown only affect the chips which have been manufactured by Intel.

What Can be Stolen?

All the important information is stored in the kernel. Banking records, credit card details, financial data, communications, logins, passwords and secret information can be stolen by using Meltdown.

With Spectre, the normal applications can be tricked so that passwords and other important data can be stolen by using Spectre.
