Shooter at large after 6 killed, 24 injured at Chicago-area Fourth of July parade

Police are responding to an “active” shooting at a Fourth of July parade in the Chicago-area city of Highland Park, Illinois, according to local officials.

Illinois State Police tweeted Monday that it is aiding local authorities with “an active shoot situation that occurred at the Highland Park Parade.”

In a tweet, the Lake County Sheriff Department warned people to stay out of the area of the parade route and said their force is assisting local police with what they described as a shooting.

It is not clear at this time whether people have been injured or killed.

The City of Highland Park said on Facebook that police are responding to “an incident” downtown, and its Fourth of July festivities had been cancelled.

“Please avoid downtown Highland Park,” the post reads.

Meanwhile, the nearby Village of Deerfield, Ill., said in a separate tweet that “due to a shooting” in Highland Park, a parade in that community has been cancelled.

The Chicago Sun-Times has reported that gunshots rang out about 10 minutes after Highland Park’s parade began at 10 a.m. local time and multiple people have been injured.

That report cited a journalist on the ground at the parade.

Highland Park is a suburb located on Chicago’s north shore.
