The newly-inaugurated President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador have held discussions on various issues of common concerns in order to ensure the continuity of friendly ties between the two nations. Furthermore, they have stressed the importance of promoting effective international cooperation and pledging efforts to boost peace, security, and stability in the region and countries across the world.

The UAE and Mexico established strong ties to strengthen mutual international cooperation, trade, investments, cultural relations, and high-level visits. Multiple bilateral agreements have been signed by the leaderships of both nations in key areas to foster growth and development in the region.

The Mexican government has expressed a sincere commitment to enhancing closer ties with Gulf nations, particularly the UAE, noting the nation’s robust positioning in the regional and international scene.

Decades of diplomatic ties
Mexico opened its first consulate-general in Dubai in the year 2008, and an embassy was set up in Abu Dhabi in 2012, with the aim of promoting trade and cultural cooperation between the two friendly nations. In line with these efforts, the UAE instituted its first embassy in Mexico City in 2008.

In 2014, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum became the first ruling Emirati PM to visit Mexico to boost the bilateral ties between the two countries. It was followed by former Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto’s first official visit to the UAE in January 2016. Mexican President’s visit witnessed the signing of 13 agreements and memorandums between the leaderships of the two nations to foster bilateral relations, trade, and investment among other important sectors. The UAE is reportedly Mexico’s second-largest trading and investment partner in the Middle East.

With the new leadership taking charge in the UAE, political analysts have indicated further advancement of long-running Emirati-Mexico ties and partnerships in key areas of expansion.
